Webroot + Everyone Administrators + Improper Firewall Configuration = Breach w/ Data Stolen and Leaked Online
Before fully onboarding with us, a new client of ours experienced a significant breach that resulted in substantial financial losses. Out-of-pocket restoration and lost productivity costs exceeded $25,000, and they faced a $160,000 ransom demand to retrieve their files and prevent data leakage. Had the client been enrolled in our program earlier, this breach could have been avoided.
Despite having Webroot installed on all workstations, the encryption of servers, computers, and data was not stopped. This failure was due to an improperly configured and outdated SonicWall Firewall, weak passwords, password reuse, and all users having administrative privileges. The breach was orchestrated by an organized multinational group known as Bianlian, who targeted multiple Eau Claire businesses simultaneously on November 5, 2022.
Our team successfully restored all critical systems and data within 24 hours. However, the ensuing investigation involved insurance, legal support, forensic IT investigators, and necessary changes that took several weeks and incurred over $16,000 in support costs.
